Ramadan Diaries: Convert of the day– Julissa Fikri

I never get tired of hearing of new converts to Islam.  Being born Muslim is a blessing– but often I wish I could discover  Islam through the eyes of a convert/revert.  It must be a beautiful thing to uncover a hidden treasure… to open it & with it– open up your heart!  SubhanAllah, I really commend those brave enough to leave the religion of their parents or friends and step outside the box.  It’s hard enough to allow the smallest change into our hearts– but to change your entire life & world is really a sure struggle!

Ramadan is a time we each reflect within ourselves. It’s a time to thank Allah swt for giving us this beautiful treasure known as Islam. It’s a time to submit entirely to Him with hopes of reaching even the lowest level of Jennah, inshallah.

That being said– I’d like to feature a woman who has changed 360 for the sake of Allah swt.  Her name is Julissa Fikri.  She’s a Hispanic American who was saved by Islam & when she came across this hidden gem her life was turned upside RIGHT– for the better.

This is her story.  May her struggles serve as a reminder & may it bring you closer to Allah swt, especially during this holy month.

How I came to Islam by Hispanic American Julissa Fikri

Salam my beautiful sisters!

It’s been quite a while since my last blog entry.  Since I last posted, I have been to Chicago, California– back to Dubai, off to Jordan, and again back home to Dubai.  I’m two fashion shows stronger & 4,000 fans greater!

I’ve been back to work (in clinic) & on to full-time (24/7) designing of the next collection for Abaya Addict.  Launching the Summer Collection was a whirlwind! From conducting a photoshoot, with my dear sister-in-law Sumiah Aduib, in the SCORCHING heat of 110 degree sun & to creating items in heavier BULK than my first collection– I was off to a crazy start!

I carried Summer Collection pieces from Dubai to the US for the fashion shows (one in Chi & one in LA) & then carried them back.  Alhamdullillah, I’m starting to find more & more sisters wearing my items on their back & letting me know that they are being complimented all-the-while!  I receive images of sisters CAUGHT in ABAYA ADDICT & I swear these pictures MAKE MY DAY!

Everyday I get over 100 emails from beauties looking to find a modest item to rock at Ramadan iftaars or a hella fierce piece to don at Eid prayer.  I also receive very sweet emails from thoughtful sisters who just want to give thanks for a new avenue of Islamic wear very different than anything before it.  I do my best to answer emails on time & to help everyone end up happy– of course I’m only human– but inshallah I do hope I’m doing okay!

I just want to take this time to give a big THANK YOU for the love, support & good wishes/duaa you bring to my life.  I could not carry on my crazy schedule without knowing that in the end–all the samples made & endless hours running around (like a chicken with my head cut off) at the factory, & the trips to the fabric markets (in the DEAD heat of Dubai) are worth it in the end.  If I can make one Muslim woman feel good for even a mere fraction of a second–then I am content.

I really can’t stress enough how honored I am to have met thousands of new friends in the past 6 months.  I could have NEVER imagined that we’d reach over 4,000 followers this quickly, alhamdullillah! Each of you has awakened in me an even stronger desire to continue to do what I love.  I hope that the people in your lives help do the same for you, inshallah!

So, with that being said– I am BACK to the BLOG & I am ready to take on new challenges that come with growing fans & climbing cliental.  We’re producing bigger & better quantity of clothing that will cover every inch of you stunners out there & inshallah– COVER YOU WELL!

Much love to all my peeps & RAMADAN MUBARAK ya Hilween!

Sister Style Spotlight– Esra Rahima from Orland Park, IL

Esra is known to rock her all-black get-ups.  She’s also famous for re-vamping every one of her outfits & getting extremely creative with her accessories.  For all these reasons, we love to follow her looks!  As of recent, we’ve seen her sporting some bright outfits that really scream *I’m fabulous!*  We sat Esra down to talk about her unique fashion sense.  This is what we discovered.

Image
AA:  Esra, we love you to see you in bright colors!  Tell us about your personal style.

Esra: My style changes daily. It’s all about what I’m feeling at the moment. Right now it’s vibrant colors, however, I usually find myself going towards all things black. I definitely experiment with different looks, and if I dig it I wear it :) One thing is certain, I always have to tweak an item of clothing to make it my own. I’ve replaced buttons on a sweater with vintage buttons, used a clip-on earing as a button once, wore a necklace as a belt (and vice versa), wore necklaces on my back (on multiple occasions), wore an XXL tunic as an off-the-shoulder dress and even used a hijab as a shirt. I realize I sound ridiculous, but I’ve been like this since I was a youngin’ :)

AA: We love how you tweek your outfits.  Tell us more about this look & why you love it.

Esra: Color blocking has taken over my wardrobe lately. As silly as it sounds, bright colors transform my mood :) I received the coral maxi skirt as a present from my sister, Ibtihal, from Piperlime. I purchased the fuscia blouse from Ann Taylor a couple months prior. As soon as I saw the Bahama Mama hijab from ABAYA ADDICT’s hijab collection, in person, the outfit clicked :) I’m wearing Rachel Roy color-blocked wedges, which I’m currently obsessed with.

AA: Esra, we NEED to know what your GO-TO item is for the SPRING.

Esra: Bright, flowy, pleated Maxi skirts!!!

AA:  What do you think will be really hot for SUMMER?

Esra: Bold colors, geometric prints, florals and mixing patterns!

We couldn’t agree more!  We can’t wait to see Esra rocking the florals & prints this summer.  Be sure to keep an eye out for more to come from this vibrant fashionista.

Sister Style Spotlight: Sumiah Aduib from Los Angeles, CA

“I love figuring out what I’m going to wear — BEST PART OF MY DAY.” — Sumiah Aduib

Sumiah Aduib is quite famous for rocking her bold looks day in and day out! We were so excited to see her in bright colors lounging around this season as well as donning some of Abaya Addict’s favorite items from Zara S/S 2012! We just had to find out more about what inspires her trendy looks. Here is what we discovered!

AA: Sumiah, we absolutely love your style! Tell us about what defines your fashion sense.

SUMIAH: I am a mix of a classic midwest aesthetic (think tailored pieces that I can wear into my forties) and fresh, trendy, beachy pieces that meld well with my LA, new-mommy lifestyle. My defining style motto is: don’t be afraid to make a statement. Wear that dress that’ll have them wagging their tongues, get that mani that people might call schizo, don that top that your mom wore in her teens. I love figuring out what I’m going to wear — BEST PART OF MY DAY.

AA: Tell us a little bit about what you’re rocking here in this photo.

SUMIAH: Head —> Toe?

Scarf: a hand-me-down from my much more fashionable older sis (yes, I’m not ashamed to admit this. I found it in her Goodwill bag). It’s an ombre orange silk wrap scarf with these small balls sewn into the edge.

Dress: It’s a tie-dye see-through dress from Zara ($69) that I hijabified with a long black lining dress of my own. I wrapped my waist in a slim cognac braided leather Micheal Kors belt ($88) that balances out the loud, psychedelic print of the dress.

Shoes: Also from Zara’s S/S 2012 line. They’re a bright teal suede flat ($49) with a matching teal rounded, toe cap — too funky!

AA: Tell us a bit about your fab accesorries.

SUMIAH: Purse is a tangerine tango (Pantone’s color of the year) classic clutch purse with a rose gold chain strap (this has been spicing up every outfit since the start of spring for me). Since the look was so busy I kept the accessories relatively simple: my WeWOOD Watch ($120) — which hasn’t left its place from my right wrist since February — and a Kenneth Jay lane turquoise marcasite ring ($80 Netaporter.com). Cannot forget the mani/pedi: Essie’s ‘Mint Candy Apple’ on my tips. Essie’s ’5th Avenue’ on my toes. And Essie’s ‘Set in Stone’ as a funky accent finger.

AA: Susu, Masha’Allah– we’re ga-ga over your fashion choices. What would you say is your SPRING must-have?

SUMIAH: My WeWood Watch. It’s a good balance for all the brights of the season and has such a earthy feel. Also the company plants a tree in your honor and name when you purchase one!

Wow, talk about giving back in the name of fashion! We just love Sumiah’s idea of buying clothing that serves its purpose of making us look good and feel good (inside & out!). We know Sumiah will be at this year’s Fashion Fighting Famine– dropping cash for a great charitable cause!

Thank you Sumiah for allowing us to shine our flashing lights on you!

You can try Sumiah’s look by pairing a bold dress with an earthy accesorry!  We know it’ll look good on you as it does on her…
